It’s a flag that’s also a bag! Think this would be super cute for a kids bike. Check out the how to over on Instructables.
More on the cooking theme this week with these great videos from Dr Lim on the food prepared for racers.
I’m so fascinated by what a tour rider eats each day. How do they get the energy to race and recover day after day and is it really exciting to get your lunch handed to you each day in a musette?
These are the things I think about while watching the tour. So I was super excited to find this article which is what Thor ate one day during the tour.
A Day in the Stomach of Thor Hushovd
Breakfast:
Oatmeal
Toast with ham
2-egg omelet
Cereal
Rice
On the bike:
4-6 CLIF bars
2 packs CLIF shot blocks
2-3 CLIF gels
6-8 bottles of team race drink
Rice cake
Small panini sandwich
On the bus after the stage:
Rice
Curry chicken or tortilla la patata
2 bottles of team recovery protein drink
Dinner:
Stuffed tomatoes and zucchini with curry rice
Beet salad
Avocados
Spaghetti
Stewed turkey with prunes
Dessert:
Sorbet
It sounds pretty good really (except for the gels am not a fan of them, they are a weird texture for me).
Then I found this article on what his almost vegan team mate Dave Zabriskie is eating in a day
Breakfast:
Oatmeal with black strap molasses; whole food optimizer; cacao nibs; nuts; cinnamon; two tablespoons of coconut butter; an apple; hemp seeds and flax seeds
On-the-Bike Snacks:
Six Clif Bar Z bars (vegan); two Clif Bar shot blocks (vegan); two Clif Bar gels (vegan); dates; six to eight bottles of special team race drink
On the Bus, Post-Race:
White rice with maple syrup and cinnamon; vegan protein shake;
two bottles of special team recovery protein drink; goji berries
Before Dinner:
Vegan protein shake
Dinner:
White rice or pasta; salad with leafy greens; vegetables —including broccoli, spinach, carrots and beets.
Dessert:
Fresh fruit and a vegan protein shake before bed
Some of that sounds really yummy and certainly gives me ideas of what to take on my future long rides.

Cycling is filled with characters and that’s just a small part of what makes it so much fun. One of the characters from Adelaide is Smudge. I first met Smudge via twitter when after I had tweeted that I was going to ride the Fat Cyclist 100 miles of nowhere he decided he would too. Not only did he smash the 100 miles required I think he also managed to con a large number of other Adelaide cyclists into coming along and riding with him but also got freebies from nearly everyplace in Adelaide to help sustain them while they rode their trainers and helped to raise money. Amazing stuff.
He’s also a big part of the World Champs posse and Tour Down Under posse and generally an all round nice guy.
So when I was contacted by a friend of his to make him a custom musette I jumped at the chance. Armed with the inside knowledge of the colours and style of his custom Smudge cap I knew just what his musette should look like.
I really hope you like your musette Smudge and was so happy to help make a gift to you from your friends. Keep riding and who knows maybe one day we’ll actually meet in person.
As part of our goal to provide you with an amazing array of cycle related products we are expanding our range of musettes. Fantastic on the bike to carry your extra food and gear and equally fantastic off the bike to carry keys, wallet, phone, some groceries and whatever else you need.
At some point in every race, training ride or everyday life do you ask yourself “What would Jens do?” if the answer is “ride harder” your probably right.
Inspired by everyone’s favourite LolCats and well, a musette is built to carry your food and there would be quite a lot of om nom noming after a food station.
The pro peloton has many unwritten codes of conduct. However a sneaky attack while going through a feeding station is one of long standing tradition. Perhaps you’ll get this bag from your team and know that it’s time for you to put the hammer down?
You could of course always join the coolest cycling posse around as well?
With the Tour Down Under happening in Adelaide the TDUposse have been making me incredibly jealous with their photos, tweets, rides and general fun and games.
It’s not too late for you to join the Posse with caps and musettes still available for purchase here
If you are in Australia don’t forget orders get sent via express post so you could order today and have your musette by tomorrow.
